We have been in the middle of a very nasty storm these past few days. I hadn't heard much about it until earlier this week, a panicked hubby (who is a meteorology geek as a hobby) of a coworker called and declared that this was to be worse that Hurricane Isabel (which was really awful here about 6 years ago). Turns out he was right!
Started raining Tuesday afternoon, really poured on Wednesday, and all hell broke loose on Thursday. All the schools were closed here yesterday and today (except Lilly's was open today!). Major flooding...MAJOR flooding around here.
But - to our great relief, the water only came up to my friend's door jam, and not actually in teh hosue. They had to wait for tide to go down to get out, but they were ok. Phew. Actually - of all my friends, I am the only one who emerged unscathed! Everyone else had flooding and/or leaking and/or significant fallen trees and/or no power. Actually - I never lost power - it only flickered. But, the entire "even number" side of my street hasn't had power since yesterday afternoon and are past 24 hours now. The power company told one of my friends not to even expect to see crews in her areas until late SUnday. So - I am counting my blessings. The weather man said we had 9-11 inches in 2 1/2 days - more than our usual MONTHS worth of rain.
The only thing I am a little nervous about is a tree that looks like it is in my back yard but is actually just past my property line. It has worried me since Hurricane Isabel, as the top of it was dead. Well, now its definietly dead and only being held up by another tree. Luckily for now it is leaning parallel to the property line and not towards the house. But, some more big winds could be a big BIG problem. Oh well - can't fix it tonight!
Lilly seemed to take it all in stride. She enjoyed coming to work with me for a few hours yesterday, and hasn't stopped talking about seeing my new office (I moved offices - actually into a conference room for now, but up near other folks/friends with my similar job). She was most impressed that I take a "belevator" to get to the 3rd floor. Yes - she pressed the buttons on teh up and down trips. We've also played a lot of games, and enjoyed the fireplace while Mother Nature raged outside.
Everyone is just beginning to dry out - but for me and my friends, we seem to have escaped with just soggy, messy yards and lots of clean up, but no injuries, and no major disasters.
