Family Night...

Maren cooked dinner for just the immediate family last night (very yummy!)...and we had a great time with just the 5 of us. Enjoy the pics....

HO HO HO!

We had a great Christmas. Her hesitations on Santa seem to have disappeared with seeing the loot her left for her...a Santa Convert! (The pics are of her playing with Santa's gift - "Diego's Animal Rescue Center" which was THE hit of Christmas....)She did really well through the church service - to my relief and delight. And thanks to balmy weather around here - I have been able to get her outside every day and run her into the ground to burn off the lingering sugar high. And...I am trying hard to get her back to her normal sleep times as she has been staying up late (on purpose on my part for Christmas Eve & Christmas Night...but it has been taking a while to undo it!). Enjoy the pics...

Visions of Sugar Plums...

So, we started a new tradition this week...baking and decorating train cakes...and it was fun...mostly....

We had a blast...she piled about a zillion pounds of candy on them (after she insisted on eating the engine train last night...she said she wanted to eat the one with the whistle). She tried all of the candy, and spit out most of it...which is what I had hoped she would do. But, she definitely ate some! I knew she would...and knew to expect some bouncing off the walls. What I didn't quite bank on or see coming...Lilly running laps around the sofa, slipping, busting her lip, blood pouring out, but the sugar high still kicking in and none of it bothering her at all! She is now snoring in bed...can you be drunk on sugar?!?!?
Another funny thing? She LOVES singing Christmas Carols....she just doesn't quite have the words right. "WE MISS YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!"

Also - here are some fun pics of Lilly and Abby from when we (& Abby's mama - my other adoptive single mama friend) went to the Virginia Children's Museum. The girls had a great time. They had full sized buses and fire trucks the kids could drive...so here is Lilly's version of "The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round...."

Overheard...

Recent conversations in our lives....

ON SANTA....
"Mama, he not a real man"

"Who, honey?"

"Santa"

"Who said that?"

"I did"

"Oh, alright then..."

ON WHAT SHE WANTS FOR CHRISTMAS...
"What do you want for Christmas, Lilly?"

"MACARONIES!"

ON OUR CHRISTMAS TREE...
(friend) "What a great tree...where did you get it?"

(me) "KMart"

(Lil) "No, mommy - it is from upstairs" (the attic)

(friend) "What else is upstairs Lilly?"

(Lil) "Mice"

ON THE FIRST CHRISTMAS...
We were reading one of those I Spy books and there was a page with pictures of tons of stuffed animals..

(Lil) "Mommy, baby Jesus had one of these..."

(me) "Had what, honey, a teddy bear?"

(Lil) "NO silly mommy, a monkey!" (all of this was said totally seriously!)

AT THE PEDIATRICIAN TODAY...
(me) "Well, I know something is wrong - she slept through the night in her own bed -not that I don't want that - it is just soooooo not her normal behavior...and she is as mean as a snake"

(doc) "Yup - mother's intuition has it again...its strep"

FROM MY FRIEND DAMARIS...
They finally got PINK and Nidia is coming home after almost 4 years!!! Their embassy appt is Tuesday and they will be home later next week...and have an INCREDIBLY blessed Christmas!!! Please join me in thanking God for allowing Nidia to finally come home...and to hold her in prayer as she goes through another difficult transition in home life that she may somewhere in her heart know this time it is for forever.

Decorating For Christmas

We put up or 2 trees...the regular one, and a 2 ft one that Lilly can decorate, redecorate and redecorate again! And - we got out our Advent Calendar that Lilly loves (a doll from a different country each day goes on a wreath...very cute).

Wedding Pics (Noooo..not mine!)

My dear friends Rhonda and Jerry after dating for some 15ish years and being engaged for a year FINALLY tied the knot on Wednesday at my house! It was sort of a secret wedding as I wasn't allowed to tell anyone until afterwords! Anyway - it was at my house and there were about 30 people there - mostly all their family. I got to do the flowers and the cake, and I had a great time doing it. It was great fun...thought Wednesday night I pretty much collapsed into my bed and put off making the Thanksgiving desserts to the next day.

Here are some cute photos from that lovely day. And - here are two HILARIOUS pics of the exhausted Lilly and Didgy imitating each other's yawns.
Finally - blatant prayer request for help. I am wearing really thin on patience and wisdom in the parenting department. We are struggling with sleep again. We are battling over everything. There is something going on in her little head and I just can't figure it out. SOrt of like when she pretended she wasn't potty trained because she thought she would have to leave Jackson behaind in the other class. I just can't piece it together. I am really wearing thin on patience and need help...so any and all prayers would be greatly appreciated.

"It's Been So Long Since Last We Met..."

OK - appropriate title & the first line to the Georgetown fight song (not to mention one of only about 3 lines in the whole song that I know...but I digress). Since I last wrote...the quick summary: shingles, sinus infection, lung infection and jury duty...and that's just me! Lilly has had Halloween, more monster battles, lots of sleep struggles, a lot of attitude struggles, but all and all seems to be doing much better. And, my company continues to go through its re-org. Its been months in the making. I keep reminding folks that if the new executive branch of the most powerful nation in the world can do it in about 10 weeks...we should b e able to hurry it up a bit. But, my cynical comments don't seem to be getting us anywhere.

I know I get all kinds of bad blogger awards. But let me tell you...its been a rough 6 weeks or so. Had the shingles, then got what I think was a sinus infection I didn't know about, which moved to a lung infection that I couldn't ignore. Seem to have gotten over those, but I STILL have a low grade fever - and have since Oct 1. But - no one seems to be worried about it, and I don't really feel bad, so I am going to just ignore it for a while and see what happens. Actually thought I had whooping cough there for a while, as a close co-worker and her sister both came down with it. And, when she was contagious was when I had the shingles, so everyone made she and I sit together on one side of the table in meetings as the "sick" side to not get everyone else sick. Smart thinking on there part I guess! Anyway, got the blood work back today and I was negative for pertussis.

Halloween: I was sick as a dog with the lung infection, but Halloween waits for no (wo)man. Lilly was not so enthusiastic about the costume as we got closer to Halloween. It wasn't that she wanted a different costume, she just didn't want much to do with Halloween in general. But, she agreed to put part on for her school party, and got dressed and went trick or treating with Jackson. Lilly and I made it to about 6 houses before she got scared and my lungs gave out. Jackson, however, was fully embracing the experience. As I carried Lilly back to my house with Lil's head buried in my chest, Superman had taken Lilly's sword, was pointing it forward and commanding to his mom and dad, "NEXT HOUSE!" So - needless to say - his trick or treat haul was quite better. But, Lilly loved passing out treats with my mom while I was laid out on the couch trying to down the Amaretto Sour my dad made for me in the hopes it would help me stop coughing. It helped the cough somewhat, and my attitude a lot. The best part of the night was Jackson & Lilly storming around the house like crazy people after trick or treating while the adults sat on teh couches in front of the fireplace laughing at them. As Lilly only had a few pieces of candy, she went through them in about a week or so. Tonight she announced to me that we needed to go again and just get some more treats. When I told her we had to wait until next year she just looked at me like I was nuts.

Maren was in town volunteering for the Obama campaign, so she and Ollie came too...check out Ollie's hot dog costume! (As Lilly pointed out..."with ketchup!")

Election morning, Lil and I headed to the polls at 6:15 to stand in the pouring rain for about 45 minutes to vote. Needless to say - Lilly was not overwhelmed with excitement about the democratic process - even after getting the "I Voted" sticker. After an early morning, I thought she would zonk out, but that night she started back down the "terrified to sleep" mode. It was a very long night, and she was up about 10 times, and then we had to get up at 5 for an early meeting. SO, I didn't get to watch Obama's acceptance speech that everyone is still raving about (even friends who voted for McCain). But, I watched it later that week online.

ALso loved this "All My Children" picture of Lilly in her big girl bed, and my cat Didgy asleep in "Baby's Bed." SInce then we have moved the bed to the other side of the room to be farther from the scary closet and scary window. Results are hit and miss, but the past few nights have been ok.
Jury Duty: I got called to be on the jury panel of this large asbestosis case against Exxon Mobile. They told us to expect the trial to go through Thanksgiving, etc. Yuck. Anyway, I was hopeful that I would get off the jury since I work at a cancer center, so a lot with Mesothelioma, and worked w/ a lot of the physicians on the witness list. After being locked in a witness room with other crazy jurors for two days, I was finally called in for juror screening. They asked me one questin"DO you really have to be at day care each day by 6?" Yes "Can your husband pick up your child?" No - I am single. Ok....dismissed. GLad to be dismissed! The overall selection was taking days...it was taking 2 hours to question 3 jurors...YIKES!
Lastly - great news from my friend Damaris. I had asked all of you to pray for her and her daughter Nidia as the adoption process was taking forever. While they have been out of PGN for more than 2 months, they only yesterday got the new and final birth certificate. Nidia is officially their daughter now! Praise God!!! They will have an amazing Christmas....
Alright...that's the quick update. Again, I am so sorry for being MIA for so long. And, a great big thank you to all of you who checked in on me. Really appreciate it!

Pumpkins and Monsters

Well...we still aren't sleeping. I mentioned that we traced it back to a book at school...this one actually.... http://www.amazon.com/Go-Away-Big-Green-Monster/dp/0316236535/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1224770967&sr=8-1 So, I bought a copy at Barnes & Noble and she and I did a "project" turning each scary monster into a silly monster by gluing, taping, coloring, stickering, etc each page that we cut out of the book. Seems to be working some, but now she is just mad at me and in a bad routine since she is used to bein up a lot at night - and mad since I won't let her sleep in my bed. Additionally, part of the fear seemed to be the issue of feeling "trapped" in her crib, so we have moved onto a "big girl bed" (aka toddler bed). We did night 2 of it last night. She is doing better at going to sleep, but not very good at staying asleep. last night she (& therefore we) were up at 12:30, 2:30, 4:30, 5:30 and then 6:30. About a year ago I had the stamina and conditioning to handle this sleep schedule - but not anymore! The fact that I still have a fever just stinks too. So, I am practicing patience.

Here are also some pics from our trip to the pumpkin farm last weekend with Jackson.

Checking In...

The shingles front is going much better. Two weeks of real misery followed by a week of working on reduced power. Now I feel better, but I still can't shake the dang fever...its been right around 99.5 for 3 1/2 weeks now!

Lilly, unfortunately, has become really, really, really, deathly afraid of a monster at night. We haven't slept in a good 3-4 days, and I am actually dreading tonight. So, the lack of sleep (+ fever I guess) has given me a real solid migraine... Middle of the night last night she finally told me it started w/ a book they had read at school. So, this morning I talked w/ her teachers and figured out the book..."Go Away Big Green Monster." I went out and bought the last copy at Barnes & Noble at lunch and she and I will have some sort of regaining control of the monster party tonigt. At first I thought just ripping it up....but I think that sends the wrong message (about books and troubles). So...we will cut out the pictures and turn scary things into funny and silly things (ala scary monster becomes tickle monster). That said...prayers for her feeling of safety and bravery would be gretaly appreciated. I've tried enforcer mode (cry it out...didn't work & made both of us miserable). I've tried cheerleader mode (yea Lilly...you are such a bug, brave girl who slept all night in her own bed! I know you can do it!...works hit & miss but not reliably). So, know I am onto desperation mode. If anyone else has tricks up their sleeves, please share (oh - and we already have the light on, music on, calm routine, and the water bottle "stay away monster spray"). Last night I even duck taped the closet doors shut. Ugh. Definietly having flash backs to when she firt came home and we didn't ssleep for all those months.

We did go to a pumpkin farm this weekend w/ Jackson & Kendra, which was great fun. Pictures to come eventually. Since I am playing picture catch up...here are some from Florida/Disney the week before shingles!

SHINGLES :( (beware...whining ahead)

I have fun pics from our trip to Florida, but I haven't uploaded them to my computer yet - so you'll just have to stay tuned. Unfortunately as soon as we came back from FL I came down with the shingles. Yuck. (Basically - the chicken pox virus I had as a 6? year old (?can't remember exactly - but I know we were still living in England) back with extra itchiness and LOTs of pain and yucky burning (& soon to be oozing) scabs all over my left arm from my shoulder & armpit down to the tips of my fingers).

Lilly has had the chicken pox vaccine, so she should be ok. I just have to avoid pregant folks, folks who haven't had the chicken pox, and immuno suppressed folks like cancer patients...except...that's right! I'm the director of a cancer center! UGH! (and, turns out my secretary hasn't had chicken pox eaither). SO...I am trying to work from home when possible & go to meetings away from the cancer center. The home part is nice so I can wear a comfy cotton tank top and not irritate the dang sores all down my arm with fancy (read itchy) work clothes. If it was just itchy and pain it would be ok, but I just feel so dang crappy...fever, exhaustion, etc.

THANKFULLY, LUCKILY, BLESSEDLY I have wonderful people in my life who are jumping up and helping...Kendra and Jackson came Saturday and Jackson & Lilly entertained each other & wore each other out while Kendra basically cleaned my house. WHat an angel. Then Dad came all day Sunday and Mom came this evening. Kendra reminded me to not be prideful & ask for help...us super-moms...especially I think those of us who are single moms by choice - feel we signed up for this gig and can/should do it all ourselves....which is of course INSANE coming out of anyone's head but your own...but pride is a tough one to swallow. So, I am so very grateful for those angels around me!

I promise FL pics once I have overcome this insatiable desire to cut off my left arm to stop the incessant itching.

Sorry for the Overdue Beach Pics!

My favorite pic (...and yes, you can expect to see this one on the Christmas card...)

This one portrays her natural genius...we had come back from the beach and I had stripped her down & was running bath water ...and I turn around and find her with the toy hamper on tope of her head, with only her really cute butt showing!

Here we are out on our wild horse tour...GORGEOUS and we saw tons of wild horses.

Lilly loved riding the John Deere tractor at one of the road side farm stands. Hap...this one's for you.

quick post...sorry no pics today...

Back from the beack & then I am headed off to a conference tomorrow...so I haven't had time to download/edit the BAZILLION pictures from our week in the OUter Banks. We had a great time...though I am continually getting an education and increased appreciation for my mother...vacation is tougher & not nearly as relaxing when you are always "on duty" as mommy! But, despite that...we had an amazing time. Lilly loved playing in the sand and swimming...but she reports that her favorite thing was reading books with Maren in Maren's "big bed." Sweet.

We also went on a jeep tour on the beaches & saw wild horses (like in Chincoteague...all descended from Spanish Mustangs hundreds of years ago), as well as a wild hog. We also saw a giant sea turtle...way bigger than Lilly. It was dead & had been washed ashore, but we told Lilly it was sleeping. When we drove back by the spot later the sherrif was trying to bury it in the sand but had only managed to make a big mound...I told Lilly the turtle had woken up and must have swum back out to sea. I am sure God will forgive these little lies parents feel compelled to tell!

Had a great time seeing an old friend from Caracas as well as the Comforts & Barnetts...fun all around...and Lilly LOVED being the center of attention and playing with her "cousin" Ollie (Maren's dachsund). Pics later in the week....c

Checking In...

I'll get to Lilly in a minute...but I just checked my email and found the great news from my friend Damaris about Nidia...and I have to quote her here...
"We are OUT!!!! Nidia is now our daughter! I just received the official PGN document with the appropriate signatures. We are so ecstatic! The lawyer wrote at 6:05pm today (4:05 in Guatemala), telling us that the file had been approved and we were OUT but that he didn't have a copy of the document and was waiting for it. I kept hitting refresh until it was finally there at 9:47pm. OMG!!! Finally! Now that I've seen and read the "protocolo", it finally seems real. Earlier today, I was afraid to believe it. He hopes to submit us for Nidia's Birth Certificate (with her new last name) on Tues. Praise God! I hope we'll be traveling before Halloween but know that's unlikely. I can still pray and hope, though. It's what's gotten us through the last 3 yrs. The important thing is that Nidia is officially OURS and we are a family of 4, at last!"

PRAISE GOD FROM WHOM ALL BLESSINGS FLOW!!!! I am so happy for them!

Now onto Ms Lil...Thursday turned into a sick day for her when she threw up all over herself, the carseat and the car on the way to "school." BUt, by the time I had pulled over to a gas station to clean her up & try to make the carseat manageable to at least get home, she seemed FINE. So, mom saved my rear end and took Lilly for the day, and Lilly loved every minute of it! She was back to herself by Friday & was back to school..and then spent the evening at Jackson's house while his parents were my saving angels and let me go back to work while I tried to get everything done before we head out on vacation. Looks like Tropical Storm Hanna may delay our start, but we should have a wonderful vacation...here's hoping.

Please join me in thanking God for Nidia's new family!!!!!

My Gal...and Good News For Nidia!

First the great news from Guatemala....nothing like making a deadline under the wire, but my friend's attorneys and investigators were able to find Nidia's birthmother and get her to Guatemala City late last week for the required interview before the Monday deadline! YEA!! Still waiting on a final "Out" from PGN, but this is HUGE! I promise to let you all know when I hear more updates. Thank you so much to all who have been praying for them - and asking me for updates. I know Nidia's mom, Damaris, reads this blog too, and I know she is being held up by all of your prayers! THANKS!

Onto Lilly...

First...the story of my child's amazing mind & incredible will power. The backstory: As I have shared, she loves her "school." She loves her teacher, Ms. Stacey, and REALLY loves spending each day with Jackson (or, as Lilly often refers to him, "my Jackson friend." She is in the "Two's" class now and will be there until late spring. I have also shared with you how she has been basically potty trained for several months now. An accident here and there - but for the most part she has been great. So, when Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday brought accident after accident after accident (both at home and at school) I knew something was going on. Tuesday I wrote off as a fluke. Wednesday I started to get concerned (asking if her bottom hurt, etc to try and rule out a UTI). Thursday morning I mentioned it to her teacher, who had noticed the trend but didn't know what to make of it. Thursday afternoon I picked her up from school, and Lilly was careful to let me know she had "tinkled and poopied" in her pants. Hmm. We talked about it on the way home, and aside from ruling out any medical issues, I couldn't figure out what was going on. Then she was standing on chair at the counter "helping" me cook when she tinkled all over the chair and floor. When I got her cleaned up, she announced to me "Mama, I need diaper. I not big girl." ???WHAT??? I kept probing, telling her she was a big girl, she did know how to use the potty, did wear big girl underpants, etc. She kept avoiding my direct questions, changing the subject, etc - just repeating that she wasn't a big girl and needed a diaper. Finally, to one of my questions she says "I not big girl, I stay with Stacy Jackson." AHHHH!! I got it - she thought that as soon as she was potty trained she would have to move up to the three year old class room and she didn't want to leave her beloved Ms Stacey or Jackson. I called the day care to confirm my suspicions and talked to her evening teacher. I was right! There were a number of kids getting ready to move up to the 3s that week (& you can't move until you are potty trained), and the teachers had been telling those kids "you can do it, you can go potty and then you can go to the 3s!" Lilly heard it, slightly misinterrpreted it, and came up with a game plan! I sat her down and had a long talk about how she could be a big, potty trained girl AND stay in the 2s - that she couldn't move up until she was 3, which was still a long way away! Seemed to work...and the next morning she used the potty at home before school. The teachers at school all agreed with my theory (& were amazed at the deductive reasoning abilities of my little 2 year old). I was dying to hear how Friday went - and chased Ms Stacey down in the parking lot as she left before I went to get Lilly...IT WAS A SUCCESS! SHe had pulled the same thing on them, telling them "I not a big girl" when they told her to go potty. But, the wonderful Ms Stacey told her "You are a big girl. You are my big girl. You have to stay here with me in the 2s, and you have to go potty." YEA MS STACEY! It worked. She is a reformed gal who now knows she can wear underpants and stay with Stacey & Jackson. Phew! But lordy lou - this makes me very afraid for some of the years to come!!!!

Finally - fun pics from Friday evening. Lilly has been really (and I mean REALLY) into musical instruments lately. Her favorite "game" is for us all to pretend that mosquitos have taken our instruments (trumpet seems to be her favorite) and we have to run around the yard and capture them back (no - I have no idea where that comes from). So, when I saw there would be a free Virginia Symphony concert outside nearby, I thought it would be fun. It was later than I usually let her stay up - but we went early and had ice cream and watched them set up, tune up and warm up. She loved it. We were able to be right up at the stage, and several of the musicians were nice enough to stop and talk to her and the bass player even showed her his instrument. We made it through 3 songs before she had to go potty (and as you know from the story above- the fact she is telling me means I am off like a jet to find the nearest potty). The concert was all latin music, so we got to hear marimbas, etc. Very fun.

Long post today...thanks for sticking with me!
