Found out this evening that Lilly and I are now legally mother and daughter. Her birthmother signed off sometime last week and we have been submitted for her new birth certificate with her new last name!!! It is just so surreal. She's mine. I'm hers. Its official!!! I thought I would be
ecstatic when I finally heard that...but it just seems so surreal I keep waiting for my caseworker to call back and tell me it was a mistake and she was reading off someone else's file! But it is real. It is final. The rest from here out is just visa paperwork to bring her to the states...but we are a family now and forever more. We have been in heart and mind for almost a year now...but now I can add legally related to that description too!

For those of you familiar with the liturgical churches, you know of the various church seasons: Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter and Pentecost. These seasons help us focus on the different aspects of God's love and different ways of worshiping and studying during those times. Currently, we arein the last week of Lent...the 40 days before Easter that are supposed to be focused on simplicity, discipline, study and prayer. Though, most of America thinks of Lent as the time when some folks give up chocolate and Catholics don't eat meat on Fridays (hence carnival from the Latin for goodby (vale) meat (carne)...but I digress). While this is the season of Lent...I am still stuck in Advent. Stuck in the great season of preparation and expectation. The time we focus on preparing our hearts for the gift of a life to change our world. As you know I have been marking my wait for Lilly with an Advent calendar, removing one block each Thursday (she was born on a Thursday, and I first saw her picture on a Thursday three weeks later). I went all the way through my calendar once and Santa fell in the chimney (ok - that's not terribly liturgical, but still serves the purpose). So, I started putting one block back in each Thursday. And now there are 2 blocks left. One will be for this Thursday, and I know there will be no news this week. The big question in my mind is whether or not I will get out of PGN before I run out of blocks (again). We shall see...week from Thursday (April 12th) is the last block...will Sr. Barrios beat Santa????
As for updates...no news on the PGN front. But, I did get the depressing news today that my USCIS Fingerprints are going to expire in a month, so I have to get re-fingerprinted (that will make 3 sets of prints). USCIS is the old INS that has now been absorbed by Homeland Security - the bastion of all that is efficient and customer-friendly. So, I have to send off a letter and another check so that Homeland Security can feel safe that I have not committed any terrible crimes in the past 15 months. Kendra made the comment this evening that 15 months seemed a rather random time for something to expire...and I totally agree. But, we then laughed as it seems to fit in with the logical structure of the rest of this absurd process!!!!
Well, President Bush was in Guatemala yesterday & met with President Oscar Berger. My fantasy was that President Bush would say "while I'm here, could you just call up that Senor Barrios in PGN and have him let Lilly out?" But, shockingly, that didn't happen. According to various webpages they talked about how committed Bush is to the Western Hemisphere. And, as highlighted on the US Embassy page, they could have discussed the US Program to promote pork eating by Guatemalans (no, I am not kidding - check out the embassy web page yourself). Slightly less tongue & cheek...my wait continues to be very hard. I heard from my new lawyers
yesterday that while they thought it might be next week they now think maybe the last week of March before I hear anything. Adding a week shouldn't be a big deal, but in reality it is agonizing. I have no rational explination as to why the wait at the end is more grueling than the last 10 months, but it is. It is so very, very hard.
On a happier note, Jackson is home with Kendra & Coop and doing really well. I got to see him several times over the weekend, and he has settled in remarkably fast. He is adorably and quite the mover & shaker. He could definitely take Lilly in a foot race any day.
So, prayer requests: 1) Thanksgiving for Jackson's safe journey home and prayers for he, his mommy & daddy as they settle in to a routine as a new family; 2) Pray for Senor Barrios to approve our file today and lets us out; 3) Pray for my sanity as I am really struggling. Please pray especially for my concentration at work and my ability to get things done now so I can really be off with Lilly when she finally comes home; 4) Please continue to pray for Lilly that God prepare her heart for a move to a new home and new mommy, as well as to pray for the foster family as they prepare to lose the daughter they have known and loved since she was two days old.

Pick out veggies she's not ready for (onion, corn, peppers, celery) and then mash up the rest of the veggies (carrots, peas, zuchini and some local veggie I didn't know the name of that looks like cucumber but seems to be some sort of squash) and shred some chicken and go for it. You can see that I am REALLY GLAD I packed that wipeable bib!

my new lawyers was pretty funny - they were apologizing and saying they were sorry about the kick out but that it
turned out well, as the reviewing lawyer I was assigned to is "very human and a speedy one." I think their phrasing on things is HILARIOUS. They said he is a kind man and they expect for me to be approved by him by the end of the week and then onto the higher levels of approval (where I got booted out most recently).
birthday as it is Mother's Day weekend and fills up quickly. I really hope that is one trip we can cancel! The way I figure it if I can be out of PGN by the first week of April then I should be able to have her home by her b day. The kicker is that the first week of April is Semana Santa (Holy Week) when everything across Latin America shuts down. So...I need to be out and approved by PGN in the next 5 weeks.

It was so wonderful to spend the week with Lilly. She is just so delightful...smart, pretty, curious, funny and so loveable! I'll post more stories throughout the week...but for now I
thought I would give you some pictures from the week. Giving her back was hard, as always. But, I feel so good about the foster family she is with. They are angels that God has blessed me with! That makes it so much better.....

But, she looks so great I can't wait to see her for real next week. Just wanted to share them...
Amazing as it is ... Lilly is 8 months old today. Trying hard not to focus on how much I have missed but rather on how much there is to look forward to.

news - I was kicked out of PGN (finally - after 6 months and 3 monthsof that in investigation!!!). The confusing news: they didn't kick me out for the 2 problems I know I have (birth certificate typo that caused the investigation & lack of pre-approval paperwork). No, instead they kicked me out because I don't have Lilly's current medical write up attached to the file. Well...no $hit Sherlock...the file has been locked up in PGN for 6 months so how could I get them a current medical?!?!?!?!?!?!? A lot of this process seems silly to me...but that one is just so ridiculous I can't comprehend it.
On a more cheery note...I did get pictures last week from her December doctor's appointment. But, that is when she was sick and you can see how pitiful she looks! SO, that just tore at my heart and
even though I said I wasn't going to call her again, I just had to call to be sure she was feeling better. So, Saturday I called the foster family. And, my Spanish is really not up to a phone call...I do better with body language and gesturing to help me out. But, I soldiered through it. The news: She is totally recovered and feeling fine. Lilly has 2 teeth and is now sitting up on her own. She is eating chicken, potatoes, apple juice & some food I didn't recognize. I asked where the teeth were...and Amarillis answered...and I still have no idea. I have it narrowed down to three possible translations...they are either next to each other, on top of each other or not next to each other...which doesn't really help me get the picture! I was trying to ask if she was crawling, but couldn't find the word for crawl (still haven't found it). So...I tried to describe it...and then realized that I had asked if Lilly was walking without feet. Hmmm...not quite what I was going for. But, Amarillis was ever patient with me, though I did hear her laughing at some things I said and repeating for the benefot of Michelle & her friend who were there. They held the phone up so I could hear Lilly playing, and all of a sudden I hear this male voice in an American accent saying, "Say Hi." No clue...but my guess is he is the Mormom missionary boy from the picture (who I am guessing is the daughter's boyfriend...but that is admittedly reading a lot into things). Anyway, despite my efforts for them to put the mysterious American on the phone, they didn't. I bet he knows the word for crawl!
